Skilled Workers
Skilled-Independent visaThe Skilled-Independent visa is a permanent residence visa for points-tested skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia. This is a permanent residence visa. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa:
- stay in Australia indefinitely
- work and study in Australia
- enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
Skilled-Nominated visaThe Skilled Nominated visa is a permanent residence visa for points-test skilled workers who want to work and live in Australia after being nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency. This is a permanent residence visa. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa:
- stay in Australia indefinitely
- work and study in Australia
- enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses
Skilled-Regional (Provisional) visaThe Skilled-Regional (Provisional) visa is for skilled workers and their families to live, work and study in specified regional areas in Australia for four years. This visa allows you and your family to:
- stay in Australia for up to four years
- live, work and study in a specified regional area of Australia
This visa provides a pathway to permanent residence through the Skilled-Regional (Residence) visa
Skilled-Regional (Residence) visaThe Skilled Regional (Residence) visa is for people who have an eligible visa and have lived for at least two years and worked for at least one year in a specified regional area. It lets you and any family members who have also been granted this visa:
- stay in Australia indefinitely
- work and study in Australia
- enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses

Temporary Workers
The Temporary Work (Skilled) visa allows skilled workers to come to Australia and work for an approved business for up to four years. You must be sponsored by an approved business. A business can sponsor someone for this visa if they cannot find an Australian citizen or permanent resident to do the skilled work. This visa allows you to:
- work in Australia for up to four years
- bring your family to work or study in Australia
Student Visa
The student visa allows you to study in Australia at a Certificate, Diploma, Degree or Higher Degree level programs in various Universities, Colleges, TAFES and Schools. It lets you and eligible family members who have also been granted this visa:
- to study in Australia
- work part time
Temporary Graduate Visa
This visa is for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution. It lets you work in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies.
This visa has two streams:
- Graduate Work stream: A visa in this stream is granted for 18 months from the date of grant.
- Post-Study Work stream: A visa in this stream can be granted for up to four years from the date the visa is granted, depending on the visa applicant’s qualification.
Partner Visa
The Partner visa allows you to live in Australia if you are the spouse or de facto partner of:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
Visitor Visa
This visa lets you visit Australia:
- as a visitor
- for business visitor activities
- to visit family
- for up to three, six or 12 months.
Contributory Parent Visa
The Contributory Parent visa lets parents live permanently in Australia if they have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. Most applicants need to be sponsored by their child. The sponsor needs to have lived lawfully in Australia for the two years before the application is lodged.
